(1831-1872)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton; teamster; 27; enl. and must. June 26,1861; must. out July 8, 1864. See Co. "E" 1st Mass. Cav. Detailed for Regt. Wagoner Sept. 1, 1861. He became the Company Wagoner, ordered to the ranks by the Colonel November 1, 1861. He was detailed for Wagoner on Brigade Supply July 22, 1862. Detailed for driver on Ambulance Corps October 2, 1862. Born at Randolph, Mass. January 23, 1831; died at New York City, NY December 22, 1872, due to phthisis, congestion of the brain, and ebrietas. He married at Westmoreland, N.H. May 5, 1856 to Elmira E. Smith.  Edwin is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, with a town headstone.  Pension: Widow ( 29 May 1882 ) 293181/282717.

FRANCIS D. ADAMS — Priv. — Res. Charlestown; upholsterer; 27; draft, and must. July 9,1863; wounded June 21,1864, near Petersburg, Va.; transf. to 39th Mass. Inf., June 25,1864. See Co. "A" 39th Mass. Inf. transf. to Co. "A" 32d Mass. Inf. 

HENRY ADAMS — Priv. — Res. Ireland; seaman; 25; draft, and must. July 25, 1863; DESERTED Aug. 20, 1863, near Rappahannock Station, Va. 

 

JOSEPH SPENCE ADLINGTON  

(1839-1914)

Service: Priv. — Res. Stoughton ; bootmaker; 22 ; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded in action Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; discharged for disability, Nov. 13,1862, from wounds received in action. [Description: 5" 6 1/2; dark complexion; blue eyes; dark hair]. Born at Boston, Mass. November 20, 1839; died at Turnpike St., North Stoughton, Mass. April 12, 1914.  is buried at Maplewood Cemetery, off Pleasant St., Stoughton, Mass.  [Click here for his obituary].

 

JOHN AMES - Priv. - Res. Boston; laborer; 21; draft, and must. July 9, 1863; transferred to Co. A.39th Mass. Inf., June 25, 1864. Transferred on January 1, 1865 to 2nd Battalion, 168th Co. Veterans Relief Corps. Mustered out of service June 7, 1865. He applied for an Invalid Pension June 29, 1880 [Application # 390304 / Certificate # 327484].

 

GEORGE O. AUSTIN - Priv. - Res. Haverhill; shoemaker; 23; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; must, out July 8, 1864, as Corpl.

George was living in Everett, Washington in 1914 at the age of 77 when he attended the G.A.R. Encampment for WA and AK.  He was deceased by September 20, 1916 when his widow Ellen F. Austin applied for a pension while residing in Washington State [Application # 1074244 / Certificate # 817634].  George had applied in Minnesota August 25, 1890 for an Invalid Pension [Application # 906822 / Certificate # 1055642].

 

 

JAMES HENRY AUSTIN 

(1834-1862)

Service: Priv. — Res. Stoughton ; bootmaker; 27 ; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; killed in action Sept. 17, 1862 [a mortal wound in the throat], at Antietam, Md.  Born at  Wareham, Mass. March 26, 1834;  killed at the Battle of Antietam, Md. September 17, 1862, age 28 yrs. 5 mos. 21 days, son of Moody and Anne (Carter) Austin. He married 27 January 1858 to Joanna E. A. (Talbot). He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton, October 9, 1862 Pension: Widow ( 30 April 1863 ) 18966/6571 [Mass.]  

 

HORACE D. W. BAKER 

(1833-1919)

Service: Priv.- Res. Campello; bootmaker; 27; enl. and must. June 26,1861; wounded May 5, 1864, at Wilderness, Va.; must, out July 8, 1864. 

From his pension "I was taken prisoner November 14, 1862 carried to Libby [Prison] was paroled and arrived at Annapolis Dec 3 or 4 1862". Born at Westford, Mass. November 30, 1833; died at Brockton, Mass. August 12, 1919. He was married at Providence, R.I. March  25, 1851 by Rev. William J. Breed to Susan Catherine Cole. She died October 21, 1912. He is  buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. [Pensioner] The photo of Horace Baker is from his Pension file.  The full image shows that his left arm was amputated during the war.

 

 

GEORGE BATES

(1832-1918)

Service: Priv.- Res. Stoughton ; bootmaker; 28; enl. and must. June 26,1861; wounded July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Penna.; tranaf. Jany. 16, 1864, to V.R. C.; must, out June 27, 1864, as of 117th Co. 2d Battln. V. R. C.  Transferred in Company 117th, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 16 January 1864 . Mustered out Company 117th, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 27 June 1864. Born at Leeds, Maine March 28, 1832; died at the home of Herbert W. Bates in South Leeds, Maine October 31, 1918, at 2:30 p.m. He was never married.  He was buried at the Valley Cemetery in Greene, Maine. [Pensioner]

 

 

HIRAM BEAL 

(1832-1918)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; bootmaker; 29; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; missing Aug. 30,1862, at 2d Bull Run, Va.[taken prisoner]; wounded July 1,1863, at Gettysburg, Penna.; transf. to V. R. C, Feb. 14, 1864; re-enlist. May 7,1864; must, out Nov. 14, 1865, as of 18th Co. 2d Battln. V. R. C. Transferred in Company 78th, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 14 February 1864 . Reenlisted in Company 78th, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 07 May 1864 Mustered out Company 78th, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 14 November 1865. He was a member of Massachusetts G.A.R. Post # 1 – William Logan Rodman. [Description: 5" 9 1/2; light complexion; blue eyes; brown hair]. Born at Randolph, Mass. December 21, 1832; died at Brockton, Mass. January 2, 1918. He married (1) May 10 1852 to Sarah E. Jones.  She died September 4, 1868.  He married (2) at Canton, Mass. August 9, 1870 by George F. Piper to Susan Amy Gifford

LUTHER SAMPSON BRYANT

(1824-1887)

Service: Corpl.— Res. Stoughton; painter; 36; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded in action Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; transf. to V. R. C, Sept. or Oct., 1863; must, out June 25, 1864, as of 53d Co. 2d Battln. V.R. C. Transferred in Company 53rd, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 01 October 1863 . Mustered out Company 53rd, 2nd Battn Regiment RC on 25 June 1864. Pension statement from Jonathan B. Whitman "the said Luther S. Bryant was in the line of his duty in the U.S. service at the battle of Fredericksbug Va Dec. 13th 1862 was injured in the hip during a charge while jumping across the rail road his foot slipped and he fell heavily on his right side thereby injuring his right hip badly, he also caught a sever cold caused by laying on the ground, which caused loss of voice". Born at North Bridgewater, Mass. September 24, 1824; died February 28, 1887.  He married  December 23. 1847 to Hannah F. Allen (d. 1880).  He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. ISAAC BURNHAM

(1840-1861)

Service: Priv. - Res. -; occu.- ; 21; enl. July 20, 1861; must. Aug. 2, 1861; wounded Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; taken prisoner July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Penna.; died Aug. 13, 1864, at Andersonville, Ga., a Prisoner of War, as Sergeant.  Service Record: Promoted to Full Sergeant. Enlisted as a Private on 20 July 1861 at the age of 21. Enlisted in Company I, 12th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 02 August 1861. Wounded on 17 September 1862 at Antietam, MD.  POW on 01 July 1863 at Gettysburg. Died as a prisoner Company I, 12th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 13 August 1864 in Andersonville, Georgia. Born at Stoughton October 19, 1839;  died as a prisoner of war at Andersonville Prison, Georgia. August 8 or 13,  1864. He is buried at Andersonville National Cemetery Grave # 5440.

CHARLES H. CHASE  - Priv. - Res. -; occupation [blank]; age 33; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Penna.; must, out Aug. 1, 1864. He applied for a Invalid Pension December 29, 1865 [120570/78571].  His widow Catherine A. Chase applied for a pension December 3, 1929, however it was not granted [Application # 1655984 - XC2625416.

 

SETH C. CHASE 

(1832-1865)

Service: Priv. - Res. Nantucket; mariner; 30; draft, and must. July 13, 1863; transferred to 39th Mass. Inf., June 25, 1864. He was taken as a Prisoner of War August 18, 1864 at Weldon Railroad, Virginia.  Exchanged on March 10, 1865.  Born at Nantucket, Massachusetts ca. October 1832; died unmarried on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts of typhoid fever April 3, 1865, age 31 yrs. 6 mos.  Seth was a son of Frederick B. and Phebe (----) Chase of Nantucket.

 

LOUIS CHENEE - Priv. -Res. France; laborer; 31; draft, and must. July 10, 1863;  DESERTED Oct. 29, 1863, near Bealton Station, Va. 

 

CHESTER CLARK

(1826-1885)

Service: 1st Lieut. - Res. Stoughton ; farmer; 34; comm. and must. June 26, 1861; resigned June 23, 1862. The following is his letter from his service record.  Dated at  Front Royal, Virginia June 15, 1862 to Maj. S. Buck, A.A.G - "Sir, I herewith beg leave as First Lieutenant of Company I. 12th Regt. Mass. Vols. The cause which has led me to resign is my extreme ill health having been for the past five weeks entirely unable to perform my duties in Camp, and to endure the extreme fatigue and exposure connected therewith.  Such being the case, I was this resignation to be considered, immediate and unconditional". Born at Raynham, Mass. July 28, 1826; died November 28, 1885. Buried at Pearl Street Cemetery, Stoughton.

JAMES A. COLTER

(1845-1886)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton; farmer; 19 ; enl. and must. June 26,1861; wounded in action Dec. 13, 1862, at Fredericksburg, Va. In 1876 James claims that "I was wounded in the right thigh at Fredericksburg Virginia".  Transferred to V. R. C, July 16, 1863 ; must, out June 27, 1864, as of Co. "A" 1st V. R. C. Born at Boston, Mass. June, 1845; died at the Consumptive Home, August 11, 1886, age 41 yrs. 2 mos., due to pulmonary phthisis. James married at Stoneham, Mass., Mass. June 11, 1871 by Rev. E.B. Fairchild (Pastor of the Christian Union Church) to Mary J. Campbell. The widow Mary (Campbell) Colter died August 13, 1928. He is buried at Stoneham, Mass.  James was a son of James and Jane (---) Colter of Windsor, Vermont.

 

GEORGE A. COOK

(c. 1843-1914)

Service: Priv. - Res. Ashland; farmer; 18; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Aug. 30, 1862, at 2d Bull Run, Va.; discharged for wounds, Oct. 11, 1862, as Corporal. He reenlisted as a Private with Co. B. 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry on September 23, 1863. He was promoted to Full Corporal January 25, 1864.  Was taken prisoner on July 5, 1864 near Rockville, Maryland, and released April 28, 1865 at Jacksonville, Florida.  He was mustered out at Boston, Mass. June 13, 1865.  Born ca. 1841; died at Box Elder Co., Utah December 9, 1914, age 71. He applied for an Invalid Pension February 9, 1897 while residing in Utah [1185/987644].  On February 3, 1918 Fanny C. Cook of Utah a contested widow applied for his pension, but it was not approved [1041191].  On December 27, 1920 George's widow Elizabeth A. Cook applied in Massachusetts for a pension, but it was also not approved [732252].

 

THOMAS B. CRITCHET— Priv. — Res. Boston; laborer; 18; enl. and must. Aug. 21,1862; wounded April 30, 1863, at Fredericksburg, Va.; discharged for disability, Aug. 19, 1863. He applied for an Invalid Pension February 1, 1864, which was granted [Application # 39863 / Certificate # 25848].

 

DANIEL T. CROCKETT —Priv. — Res. Boston; carpenter; 36; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; disch. for disability, Feb. 5, 1863, from wounds received in action. 

 

SAMUEL N. CURTIS - Priv. - Res. Kingston, N. H.; teamster; 38; enl. and must. July 5, 1861; must, out July 8, 1864.  He was born at New Hampshire in June 1824; and was living in Georgetown, Massachusetts in June 1900, and in Newburyport, Mass. in April 1910.

 

MICHAEL DALY  - Priv. - Res. —; laborer; 21; draft, and must. Aug. 4, 1863;  DESERTED Sept. 20, 1863, near Rappahannock Station, Va.

 

PETER J. DALY  - Priv. - Res. Nova Scotia; butcher; 26; draft, and must. July 18, 1863 ; DESERTED Oct. 29, 1863. 

HARVEY ARKA DARLING

(1838-1862)

Service: Corpl. — Res. Stoughton ; jeweler; 22; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; killed Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md. 

Born at Salem, Mass. September 27, 1838; died at the Battle of Antietam, Virginia. September 17, 1862.  His body was brought back to Stoughton for burial at the Evergreen Cemetery October 9, 1862.

 

WARREN FRANCIS DEAN 

(1837-1863)

Service: Priv. - Res. Taunton ; farmer; 25 ; drafted and mustered Sept. 23, 1863 ; taken prisoner Oct. 11, 1863, near Rappahannock Station, Va.; died of disease, December 27, 1863, at Richmond, Va., a Prisoner of War. Born at Taunton, Mass. July 11, 1837; died at Richmond, Virginia December 27, 1863.  Warren was a son of Adolphus Woodward and Abigail (----) Dean.

 

CHARLES DORAS  - Priv. - Res. New Hampshire; seaman; 22; draft, and must. July 25, 1863;  DESERTED Aug. 18, 1863, near Rappahannock Station, Va. 

 

EDWARD DORSEY - Priv. - Res. Fall River; farmer; 21; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; disch. for disability, Dec. 31, 1862. He also served with Co. A. 15 U.S. Infantry and Co. A. 24 U.S. Infantry.  He applied August 6, 1887 in Illinois for an Invalid Pension which was approved [Application # 618503 / Certificate # 43108].

 

 

ABRAM BUREN DYER  

(1841-1885) 

Service: Priv. - Res. Randolph; bootmaker; 20; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; disch. for disability, Feb. 7, 1863, from wounds received in action. Born at Braintree, Mass. June 13, 1841; died at Glen Echo Lake, Stoughton, Mass. January 20, 1885. Abram accidentally drowned while ice skating, age 43 yrs. 7 mos. 7 dys.  Buried at Lot # 62, Maplewood Cemetery, Stoughton, Mass. [Click here for his obituary].

 

SAMUEL H. ELLIOTT  - Priv. - Res. Haverhill; clerk; 24; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; discharged for disability, Feb. 19, 1863.  He applied for an Invalid Pension August 9, 1890 which was granted.

 

GEORGE A. EWELL

(c. 1834-1862)

Service: Priv.- Res. Danvers; wood turner; 28; enl. and must. Aug. 11, 1862; killed Aug. 30, 1862, at 2d Bull Run, Va. His widow Angeline G. (Smith) Ewell applied for a pension September 11, 1862 which was approved [Application # 17912 / Certificate # 7902].  His minor child Angeline Hall applied for a pension March 10, 1870 which was approved [Application # 194469 / Certificate # 149580].  Born at Detroit, Michigan ca. 1831; killed at the Battle of Second Bull Run, Virginia August 30, 1862.  George was married at Georgetown, Mass. December 31, 1854 by H. N. Finney to Angeline G. Smith.  George was a son of John and Cynthia (----) Ewell.

 

JOHN FANNON 

(c. 1825-1890)

Service: Priv. - Res. Lawrence; operator; 38; draft, and must. July 10,1863 ; wounded May 5, 1864, at Wilderness, Va.; transferred. to 39th Mass. Inf., June 25, 1864. See Co. "A" 39th Mass. Inf. Born ca. 1825; died at Togus National Soldiers Home, Togus, Maine August 8, 1890.  He was buried at Togus National Soldiers Home, Togus, Maine [Plot E - 827].  John had applied for an Invalid Pension August 11, 1865 which was granted [Application # 82081 / Certificate # 100758].

 

FRANKLIN W. FELLOWS

(c. 1842-1925)

Service: Priv. - Res. Barre, Massachusetts; shoemaker; 51; draft, and must. July 24, 1863; transferred to Signal Corps, Feb. 1, 1864; and discharged for disability, Aug. 12, 1865, from Signal Corps, U. S. A. Born ca. 1842; died April 25, 1925. He applied for an Invalid Pension November 3, 1865 which was granted [Application # 94793 / Certificate # 70415].  His widow Lizzie A. Fellow applied for a Pension in Massachusetts June 22, 1925 which was approved [Application # 1234328 / Certificate # 964319].

 

DANIEL FERRIS  - Priv. - Res. Abington ; bootmaker; 19 ; enl, and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietam, Md.; disch. for disability, Oct. 20, 1862, from wounds received in action. 

 

JOHN FOLLEN - Priv. - Res. Ireland ; laborer.; 25; draft, and must. July 18, 1863 ;  DESERTED Aug. 19, 1863, near Rappahannock Station, Va. 

 

NATHANIEL FICKETT FOSTER 

(1845-1897)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; farmer; 18; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Aug. 30, 1862, at 2d Bull Run, Va.  His disability certificate states "injury of the right leg; from a gun shot would received he states at Bull run 30 August 62 : the ball is still in the leg - disability slight". Discharged for disability, January 5,1863, from wounds received in action. See V. R. C. [Description: 5" 11 1/2; light complexion; blue eyes; sandy hair]. Born at Stoughton [or Canton], Mass. August 8, 1845; died at Buzzard's Bay, Bourne, Mass. May 29, 1897, due to syncope and valvular disease of the heart. Nathaniel married (1) to Alice J. Churchill, who died at Stoughton January 22, 1868.  He married (2) at Stoughton October 18, 1871 by Rev. A. St. John Chambre to Garafelia F. Fisher. Nathaniel was a son of Joseph A. and Margaret C. (Brazer) Foster.  He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. [Pensioner] [Click here for his obituary].

Born December 5, 1831; died at Andersonville Prison, Georgia August 5, 1864.  He married at Stoughton, Mass. December 5, 1857 by Rev. Thomas Wilson to Louisa C. Mackie.    She married (2) September 5, 1865 to James S. Dutton [brother of George W. Dutton].  Her second husband died on the Island of Ossaabaw, Georgia in September 1876. She married (3) at Caribou, Maine September 2, 1886 to Lorenzo D. Hobbs.  Louisa was born at Palmyra, Maine in 1836; died at 3044 Hoover St., Los Angeles, California November 22, 1916.

He was the brother of Edgar Niles Lane, and a son of John and Jane (Sullivan) Lane. The following is a letter sent October 10, 1864 from I. N. Pike of Ashland, Mass. to A. Orville Fay regarding Sanford's whereabouts "Dear Sir, As I have been unable to get any reliable information about Sanford P. Lane whom you inquired about.  I have delaid writing, but yesterday I saw J.R. Babcock, who served his three years in the 12th Reg. and is perfectly reliable.  He says Lane was in that Reg. that when they crossed the Rapidan Lane was lame and sick, unable to go, he felt interested for him (as he was an old aquaintance) and stayed with him as long as he could, and just escaped being captured, he feels certain that rebels saw him, but thinks as he was where he left him the chances are that he is not living as he has not been heard from since".  Born at Maine  ; died at Andersonville Prison, Georgia August 24, 1864, due to diarrhoea and scurvey.  Buried at Andersonville Grave # 6735. He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. He lived at 653 Park St., Stoughton in 1919. Francis was a son of Jonathan and Mary A. (Hayden) Raymond.

Born at Brunswick, Maine April 16, 1841 [calculated]; died at Hyannis, Mass. August 5, 1907, age 66 yrs. 3 mos. 19 dys., due to a cerebral hemorrhage and interstitial nephritis.  Henry married at Foxboro, Mass. April 23, 1865 to Ellen Atwood. Ripley at Pine Hill Cemetery, West Bridgewater, Mass.

ALEXANDER SWALLOW

The following is his statement from his Declaration for an Invalid Pension "while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty, he received the following wound, a Gunshot wound in the right thigh, ball entering and there remians now this happened in battle of Antietam Sept 17, 1862 was confined at McKim Mansion Hospital, Baltimore Md for nearly three months, and am now unable to do any hard work out doors". Born at Maine 1841; died at Grand Isle, Nebraska June 12, 1911. In 1910 Alexander was residing at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in District 113, Washington, Hall Co., Nebraska. [Pensioner]

 

 

VINTON F. SWALLOW

(1840-1863)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; bootmaker; 21; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; transf. Oct. 12, 1861, to 5th U. S. Cavalry.; died in action at Manassas Gap, Virginia July 21, 1863, due to a gunshot wound. Vinton was a son of Leonard and Drusilla (Keene) Swallow [Mother's Pension].

(1818-1876)

Dec. 17, 1862.  Paroled at City Point, Va. January 10, 1863 must, out July 8, 1864. [Description: 5" 9; light complexion; black eyes; brown hair]. Born at Stoughton October 18, 1839; died at the Old Soldier's Home, Chelsea, Mass. September 21, 1915, due to myocardial heart disease.  Henry was a son of Ellis and Maryann D. (Wild) Wentworth of Stoughton.  Buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Stoughton, Mass. [Pensioner]

 

 

WILLARD WILDE WENTWORTH

(1835-1907)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; boot maker; 23; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; discharged for disability, Aug. 27, 1863. His disability discharge certificate states "disease of the Aortic valve; contracted since enlistment. Degree of disability total, Unfit for Invalid Corps". [Description: 5" 7 1/2; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair]. Born at Stoughton, Mass. September 6, 1837; died at Holbrook, Mass. February 13, 1907, due to Bright's disease and heart disease.  Willard is a son of Ellis and Mary Ann (Wild) Wentworth. He married (1) at Stoughton, Mass. February 2, 1858  by Elder George Waugh to Laura A. Johnson, she died at Stoughton February 14, 1883.  He married (2) at Stoughton July 28, 1893 by Elder George Waugh to Ellen L. Blake. Willard is buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Stoughton, Mass. [Pensioner]

 

 

JAMES F. WHITE

(1834- after 1884)

Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; farmer; 27 ; enl. and must. June 26, 1861;  DESERTED June 7, 1862. [Description: 5"10; light complexion; brown hair; brown eyes]. Born ca. 1834; died after 1884 perhaps in Heman, Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada. In 1884 he applied for a pension while residing in Mayo, Hastings Co., Ontario, Canada. He gave the following mispelled testimony on July 22 1884 : "I volenteared in the Co I 12 Masachatus Regiment at fort Waren Boston harbour Mass - in June 1861 and was mustard into U.S. Service by an U.S. Officer unto done my duty in every respect while in Virginia at Warrington in a scrimish, I was wounded by a Shell and taken Prisiner, June 17th 1862 and held Prisenor until Novr 25, 1862 when I made my escape I was not in any Hospitle dureing the time when I made my escape, I was not paid for any service and through the effects of it I have not been a well Man since when I went into the service I came into Boston Mass. on a vessel, went to Fort Warren and Volenteared, never saw my Officers before, or have I ever seen any of them since.  I was hurt in the left breast by a piece of exploded shell, by which I am troubled with Heart complaint ever since being most of the time unable to do any Labour, also I was hurt in the Groin so that if I do any heavy lifting it causes enlargement of the veins causing piles to trouble me very bad.  I have not been the Military or Navel service since".  His pension request was rejected by the Adjutant General's Office in 1887 asserting he in fact deserted.

 

 

SETH M. WHITE 

(1830-1862)

Service: Sergt.- Res. Stoughton; boot maker; 31; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; killed Aug. 30, 1862, at the battle of Second Bull Run, Va. Born at Stoughton in 1830; killed in action at the battle of Second Bull Run August 30, 1862.  He married (1) at Randolph, Mass. February 12, 1851 to by Rev. C. Hitchcock (of the First Congregational Church) to Martha A. Holmes. They must have divorced between 1851-1859 because he married her a second time at Stoughton, Mass. September 20, 1859 by William Leach.  

 

JONATHAN B. WHITMAN

(1829-1894)

Service: Sergt. - Res. Stoughton ; farmer; 32; enl. and must. June 26, 1861 ; apptd. 1st Sergt., date not shown ; comm. 2d Lieut., June 24, 1862; comm. 1st Lieut., March 9,1863; comm. Captain, May 11, 1864; must, out July 8, 1864, as Captain of Co. "G". Born at Woodstock, Maine June 3, 1829; died at Roxbury, Mass. May 25, 1894.  Buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton, Mass.

 

GEORGE H. WHITNEY - Priv. - Res. Boston; boot finisher; 32; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Penna.; admitted to regimental hospital date not shown; transferred July 1, 1863; no further record found.

 

THOMAS WILLIAMSON

(1823-1874)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; boot maker; 40; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; discharged for disability, Oct. 3, 1862. [Description: 5" 8; light complexion; blue eyes; dark hair]. Born at Marshfield, Mass. 1823; died at Stoughton, Mass. January 3, 1874, age 55 yrs. 3 mos. 18 dys., due to pleural pneumonia.  Thomas was a son of Abner and Sarah (Thomas) Williamson of Marshfield.

LYSANDER WOOD   

(1835-1906)

Service: Priv. - Res. Stoughton ; boot maker ; 25 ; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Penna., July 1, 1863.  Confined at Richmond, Va. July 21, 1863, paroled at City Point, Va. August 12, 1863. He was detached as a Guard at the Brigade Headquarters from November 1863 - April 1864.  Mustered out July 8, 1864. [Description: 5" 10; dark complexion; black eyes; dark hair].  Born at North Bridgewater, Massachusetts September 16, 1835; died at Stoughton, Mass. August 14, 1906, due to jaundice.  He married (1) at Stoughton, Mass. December 25, 1857 by Rev. J.M. Dennis to Abbie Frances Holbrook, she died at Stoughton February 4, 1882.  He married (2) at Leominster, Mass. May 28, 1892 to Louisa Augusta Chase. Buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton, Mass. WILLIAM A. WOOD - Priv. - Res. East Boston ; clerk ; 18 ; enl. and must. June 26, 1861; wounded Sept. 17, 1862, at Antietana, Md.; and May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville, Va.; must, out July 8, 1864.
