Last Will and Testament of Lucinda Hodges (written in 1839)

On this first day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine, I Lucinda Hodges of Stoughton in the County of Norfolk , widow make this my last will and revoke and any former wills by me made.

I, give and devise to my son Leonard Hodges his heirs and assignees about one fourth of an acre of land situate in Stoughton, aforesaid and on which he has erected a Barn and made sundry other improvements, bounded Westerly on the road leading from said Leonard’s to Azor Pope’s, Easterly by the pond and extending northerly to the bridge near said barn and southerly on said Pond to a large rock and on said road in a Southerly direction to a stake and stones by the wall on said road and is a part of the land conveyed by William Wilson by his deed dated April 6th 1836.

I also give and bequeathed to my said son Leonard and to his heirs and assigns the sum of Six hundred dollars.

I give devise & bequeath to my daughter Lucinda H. Park, wife of Calvin Park, D.D. the use improvements and income during the term of her natural life all the land which I purchased of Nathan Drake and conveyed to me by his deed dated Jan. 6, 1837 together with all the land and buildings which I purchased of William Wilson and conveyed to me by his two several deeds both bearing date April 6th 1836, excepting however about one fourth of an acre which I have given as above to my son Leonard; at the decease of my said daughter Lucinda.

I give and devise the same to my son Leonard his heirs and assigns forever.

I also give and bequeath to my said daughter Lucinda one hundred dollars.

I give and devise and bequeath to my son Leonard in trust and to his successor in office in case of the death or resignation of said Leonard the use occupation & income of all the land and buildings situate in Meriden in the state of Connecticut which I purchased of Sherlock Perkins and conveyed to me by his deed dated Jan. 3d 1837.

And for the sole and separate use and benefit of my daughter Eliza Evelina Leonard wife of Jonathan Leonard Jr. of said Meriden during her life and from and after the decease of my said daughter Eliza I give and devise the same to those of her children who shall be living at the decease of Eliza in equal shares and to their heirs & assigns forever.

Furthermore I give and bequeath to the children of my said daughter Eliza the sum of two hundred dollars to be equally divided among those living at my decease.

I give and bequeath to my Grandson Samuel W. Hodges seven hundred dollars to be paid to him by my executor hereinafter named when he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years and not to hear interest in the mean time, but in case he shall not live to attain the age of twenty one years, then I give and bequeath the same to my three children, Leonard Hodges, Lucinda H. Park, and Eliza Evelina Leonard in equal portions.

I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucinda and my son Leonard all my household furniture to be equally divided between them.

I give and bequeath to my two daughters Lucinda H. Park and Eliza E. Leonard all my clothing.

All the residue of my property and estate I give and bequeath to my daughter Lucinda H. Park, and my son Leonard Hodges to be divided equally between them.  I hereby constitute the above named Leonard Hodges sole executor of this will in Testimony of all which I hereunto set my signature & seal the day first above written.

Signed, sealed and declared by the said Lucinda Hodges to be her last will and testament in presence of us who at her request and in her presence & in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses hereto.
